EMS Solutions and Field Access Systems have assisted PowerNet to win the "Excellence in the Use of IT for a Mobile Workforce" category in the New Zealand Computerworld Excellence Awards.

Invercargill based Electricity Lines Company PowerNet, recently won the Excellence in the Use of IT for a Mobile Workforce category in the Computerworld Excellence Awards for the implementation of a Mobile Solution for Improved Tree Management.

The award was presented at a glittering Awards ceremony in Auckland on Friday evening 29 th July. The Computerworld Excellence Awards celebrate the achievements of New Zealand's leading information technology users and were first held in early 1998. The Awards publicly salute the efforts of those individuals and teams who successfully apply information technology to meet the needs of users in their organisations.

EMS Solutions' consultant Euan Little worked closely with PowerNet's Dave Dunlop to supply, develop and integrate the FAS (Field Access Systems) AssetWare in-field data capture application with the EMS-WASP® Assets and Works Management system used by PowerNet.

This solution was developed to assist arborists in effective tree management. The solution offered in-field data capture that integrates with the EMS-WASP® assets and works management database, providing arborists with instant access to the list of trees needing work. The ability to integrate key information at the handheld and upload the required data into the backend WASP database, with no manual input, plus maintain referential integrity with the database, has been an integral part of the success of this project. The display of maps on the hand held, together with the ability to photograph the tree and attach this to the asset record are additional features of the solution.

This solution reinforces WASP's ability to relate a new asset (a tree) to an existing asset i.e. a pole and build a comprehensive asset register (together with any required work tasks) from routine field inspections with little administrative overhead.

EMS Solutions is pleased to announce that the company has won the 2004 Telstra ACT Government Small Business Award for their business category. The award is the Panasonic Australia Business Award, and was announced at a Gala Dinner in Canberra on Monday 28 June 2004.

In accepting the award Allen Matthews, the Managing Director of EMS solutions, said "EMS started business 9 years ago with a vision to create world class Assets and Works Management Software for companies to better manage their assets and associated works and create greater shareholder value as a result.

"Today EMS is a wholly owned Australian Company based in Canberra with almost 30 staff in offices in Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart and Auckland New Zealand".

Allen further commented that EMS has as it's competitive advantage:

  • its innovative highly configurable software
  • knowledgeable and experienced people that make up the EMS team

EMS started out with 4 people in 1995 providing Asset and Works Management software to electricity companies to facilitate improved assets and works management.

Today, EMS software is used by many clients to manage a diverse range of assets including

  • Electricity Networks
  • Water reticulation and sewerage treatment plants
  • Local Councils across their range of diverse activities (Roads, Parks, Play-grounds etc)
  • Australian Government departments
  • Airports
  • Buildings and Property

The company has grown rapidly over the last two years, has a growing number of large utility clients, and competes successfully against large international software companies. Our software products can provide a major cost benefit in Asset intensive organisations where implemented and operated appropriately by clients. EMS provides business consultants to assist in the process of establishing best practice Asset and Works systems and processes that add value to our clients businesses. EMS's strategy is to take Asset Management software to a new level and has the potential to compete in the world markets outside of Australia and New Zealand. Allen further commented that "all this could only be achieved as a result of all the efforts of the great people within the EMS team".

EMS became involved with these business awards to learn more about ourselves and to find out how we stood up against other innovative companies within the ACT and Australia generally. We also aimed to gain recognition for our people, our clients, our company, our products, services and to lift our "quiet achiever" profile. EMS has a range of clients who have supported EMS over the years and benefited from the relationship. This award is recognition of our business approach and clients can expect greater innovation and involvement from EMS in the future.

On behalf of EMS, Allen thanked the organizing committee, the sponsors (and in particular Panasonic who sponsored the award won by EMS), Telstra and the Australian Capital Territory Government and most importantly the great team at EMS who made this success possible.
